Algorithm charts the way to music success Feb. 7 - A team of scientists from Bristol University in the UK will be watching with particular interest as this year's Grammy Awards ceremony hands out statuettes for musical achievement in 2011. The scientists have developed algorithmic software they say can predict whether a song will be a hit or a flop with 60 percent accuracy, a development that could one day make the job of the Grammy judges much easier. Nikon captures 'big picture' with D800 Feb. 7 - After disasters in Japan and Thailand set back production of new camera models in 2011, Japan's Nikon has been announcing new cameras at a torrid pace so far this year including its latest DSLR called the Nikon D800 which boasts 36.3 megapixels and high-end video capabilities. Inspired by nature, spinning surveillance drone readied for action Feb. 6 - Engineers at Lockheed Martin have developed a new drone inspired by the maple seed that can be launched like a boomerang to give a 360 degree view to an operator in real time. Called the Samarai drone, the UAV is designed for military stealth missions in confined areas. Sharon Reich reports. Jet engine bike passes test-fire trial ahead of speed record bid Feb. 6 - British inventor Richard Brown has built a unique jet engine-powered motorbike, fitted with an afterburner, which he plans to drive at more than 700 kph (440 mph) to break the world land speed record. It will be Brown's second attempt, after trying but failing to beat the current record in 1999. Jim Drury reports. Deadly pitcher-plant inspires super slippery nano-surface Feb. 6 - Researchers at Harvard University have created a technology that makes almost any surface liquid-repellant. The scientists say their creation, inspired by a carnivorous lotus plant, could be adapted for a variety of uses, from water-proofing fabrics in the home to improving the efficiency of oil pipelines. Job hunters face technical glitch Feb 3 - New York-Presbyterian Hospital is one of a growing number of employers using a computer tracking system to catalog and sort resumes in hopes of finding the best candidates, as job applicants far outnumber vacant positions. Floating cities proposed as havens of future happiness Feb. 3 - From Russia and the Middle East to western Europe and the United States, dissatisfaction with politics and politicians has led to protest, conflict and, in many cases, violence. But it doesn't have to be that way, according to a U.S. think-tank called The Seasteading Institute. Backed by wealthy donors, the non-profit group believes future peace and prosperity lies far out at sea. Ben Gruber reports. Crab-claw inspired endoscope comes to grips with stomach cancer Feb. 3 - A crab-claw inspired robotic endoscopic arm has been developed in Singapore, allowing surgeons to operate quickly on early-stage stomach cancer patients without leaving a scar.
